SmartPackets Inc. (www.smartpacketsinc.com)

SmartPackets, Inc. ("SPI") and SmartPackets technology grew out of the product developments of InternetClass Communications, Inc. ("ICC"), the predecessor company to SmartPackets, Inc. During its formation in December of 1998, ICC located its principal business in Manchester, New Hampshire and was founded by 2 young entrepreneurs, Murat Bahadiroglu and Chas Nicholas. InternetClass focused all product development efforts in collaboration and audio conferencing for distance learning and business applications.

InternetClass initiated new product development efforts to integrate video conferencing to the existing audio and collaboration product lines and to target the fast growing wireless video market. The adaptive packet-sizing technologies that were developed, successfully addressed the bandwidth limitations and packet losses in the wireless environment. These breakthrough technologies, the precursor to SmartPackets, enabled a wireless video demo to send and receive audio/video simultaneously (and operate on processor speeds as low as 70MHz) with Internet connections as low as 3 Kbps (observed). In the spring of 2001, Robert McCray an experienced executive, entrepreneur, and Angel investor, introduced Murat Bahadiroglu to Bill Nyhan. Nyhan recognized the raw potential of adaptive packet-sizing and offered ICC seed money to un-bundle the technology from the application so the adaptive sizing component could be applied to all packet-based networks. The Company was reorganized and shifted focus to the development of what is now called the SmartPackets technology. ICC was merged into SmartPackets, Inc., a new company formed in the summer of 2001. The new corporate name, "SmartPackets", better reflects what the Company does and incorporates our patent-pending technology and trademark into the Company name.

SmartPackets completed a simulation comparing data transfers on a CDPD connection at the end of 2001. This comparison showed that SmartPackets, when unbundled from the application software, could make a significant improvement in throughput. It also demonstrated that the technology could be ported over to other packet-based networks. In this simulation, improvements in throughput of over 800% were recorded.

After studying various markets in Q1, 2002, SPI embarked on product development for improving 802.11b, also known as Wi-Fi. By summer of 2002, 'SmartPackets over Wi-Fi' was up and running in the lab in a 'live environment' logging results similar to the CDPD simulation. By the end of the year, the company will release a product family, the Smart 11 Series. Smart 11 will be a licensed suite of Intellectual Property developed for Computer Manufacturers, WLAN equipment manufacturers, chipset manufacturers, and WLAN Software Vendors, to improve Throughput, Range, and Power Consumption.

Our mission is to improve wireless transmissions over Wi-Fi, CDMA, GPRS, Bluetooth, or DOCSIS. To accomplish this, SmartPackets, Inc. has created an implementation process and methodology for dynamically sizing packets resulting in significant performance improvements. The company is comprised of a small group of accomplished professionals from diverse disciplines. Together they are driving to realize the vision of crisp, application-rich wireless computing and communications. SPI plans to license this know-how to companies that recognize the need to accelerate performance in new or existing network solutions. In addition to SmartPackets' intellectual property, the company has developed implementation technology for 802.11. We plan to create other solutions for Bluetooth, CDMA, DOCSIS & GPRS in the future.

Universities

Bosphorus University Biomedical Institute (www.bme.boun.edu.tr)

The Institute of Biomedical Engineering of Bosphorus University was established in 1982 as an interdisciplinary graduate school in the field of Biomedical Engineering.

The Institute of Biomedical Engineering is unique in Turkey and offers interdisciplinary instructional programs and research, leading to MS and Ph.D. degrees in three major areas, namely in Bioelectronics, in Biocybernetics and Biomechanics, and in Prosthetics and Artificial Organs.

The field of Biomedical Engineering has emerged as an important profession in developed as well as developing countries and is concerned with the application of engineering technology and science methodology to the analysis of biological, physiological and health care problems.

During the past several decades the medical profession has grown to depend increasingly on machines and sophisticated electronic instrumentation supported by elaborate clinical data processing procedures for the delivery of quality health care. As a response to these requirements the Biomedical engineers are responsible for producing high technology medical equipment and biological instrumentation, for devising new and efficient methods for physiological measurements, medical data processing and analysis, for developing prosthetic materials and artificial organs, and for introducing the suitable technological developments to the health care system.

From September 1982 to October 1992, the Institute had been receiving UNDP and UNESCO assistances in the framework of a development project, the consulting services, training programs and fellowships. The aim of the project was to support the activities of the Institute and strengthen its capacities in order to respond to the critical health care problems in Turkey, with the long-term objective of becoming a Regional Center for neighboring countries with similar problems.
